I thought they were cursed to be evil when they were put in the boxes, but they didn't want to be, so they exploited a loophole: make "curses" that were beneficial to the one that freed them, so they could be "evil" without being evil.

...or maybe they were just bored out of their skulls....

Actually, if you read what the minstrel says, you will know that they are not in fact dark spirits or demons, but the souls of the four heroes who first vanquished the Shadow Queen. They only pull the whole "Oogity boogity boo" shtick out of boredom. I mean, seriously, it must get pretty boring being stuck in a box for a thousand years.

There wasn't much depth to the original Zelda, but what was there is very likely the same in both regions. Had there been any changes to the storyline, for example, it would probably be mentioned on some Zelda site. If you can find proof that supports your theory, then you can post it here.
Some people don't trust wikipedia for whatever reason, but I consider it to be very reliable. As an example, notice the localization section in this article. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bionic_Commando_%28N...
What I mentioned above I believe would be mentioned on the Zelda article had there been significant changes in localization. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda_...

Blur blur, you realize that the legend of zelda was probably different in Japan? It was created in blasted 1989, so you can't go off saying that it always had characters like that, sure, the American version of the original had it, but the Japanese version was different. In a Japanese sonic episode, Knuckles swore, but the dub edited it out, etc. etc.

This demon was not good, it was evil. There was a posession anyways so it would still be evil even if nintendo made it to be good. And i dont see how "the Legend of Zelda" could ever be a christian story because all the characters were polytheistic. And even though we were made in God's image, we are not "godlike". Some Christians do believe that demons are fallen angels, but some believe that they are deceased nephilim that were taken by the flood that Noah survived.

That and the fact to most people find the word to sound cool.

I'm not quite sure, but I figure it to be that because of all of the other things that come out. In shows like Inuyasha there are demons like from japanese myths. Most are evil though some are good like in Japanese myth. Another thing is that some merely are looking out for survival. In that sense they could be like bears or lions, not inherently evil. In Christianity, it refers to moral alignment such as good or evil. Fallen angels are demons. they were not created separate from the rest. They were not made evil, they were made like the rest, but their sins made them imperfect and what makes them evil is that they hate anything that even resembles Godlike humans that were made in His image. Therefore the big difference between the two is that Japanese myths refer more to different species like the Oni or the Tanooki.

Most Americans aren't offended by the word demon or the fact that you were fighting one. It's weird sometimes because of the things that were or are censored and the things that weren't or aren't censored. For instance, In the Legend of Zelda series, Link was originally a Christian story. The book of magic was originally a Bible. In Zelda 2 Link finds a cross that makes invisible things, visible. Artwork for A Link to the Past portrays Link kneeling and praying to Jesus on a cross in a church. In Final Fantasy Churches with a cross on them were changed to a clinic with a heart on them. This was all before the ratings board where Nintendo censored things they deemed offensive. Now we have games where you're a criminal and you kill people, Games where you play as a sociopath and other games. We tv shows that pop up all the time that have demons. Some of the media shows correct portrayals, but still blaspheme God in favor of ratings and money. I assure you Nintendo was probably not even considering whether it would be offensive.
