You can actually skip the whole beginning and ending cutscenes that reveal the story and dark spiritual parts if you choose too - just saying.

Actually you can only assume some bits and pieces of what you've called the story, The creator of the game said he intentionally gave no story, he wanted you to make one for yourself.

****SPOILERS****

Ha ha I just realized you thought the colossi were innocent. Like the guy before me, the Colossi just had several pieces of Dormin. Long before the game Dormin was split into 17 pieces with one being trapped in that temple and the others trapped within the Colossi. They aren't evil, but will fight to protect their piece of Dormin. When Wander defeats a Colossus the piece of Dormin takes residence in Wander. That is the reason he looks worse as the game progresses. When all the Colossi are defeated the last piece, # 17 is freed from it's imprisonment. The thing that justifies Wander is first he doesn't know Dormin is evil and is trying to save the girl. Second some of the Colossi are just plain aggressive. I got thrown around like a rag doll just for stepping on the Colossi's turf. Not so innocent there, buddy. Great game, but not as good as Ico.

I have this game and I can clear the ending a bit more...
This is A SPOILER so dont think it will be spoiler free.

The biggest thing for me was the end, basically there is no story, the characters dont even speak English or at all, the dormin, who you first meet, is a demon who tells wanderer that he can save his girlfriend if he can kill all 16 colossi, turns out theres 17 (more on that in a bit), knights catch wind of wanderer leaving ran to follow him into the land, when they get there wanderer has killed the 16th colossus, now dormin the demon, now has all 17 parts, (dormin being one of the parts) he then posses wanderer, and takes over to crush the knights that come in, as a last resort, the leader, stops dormin by turning wanderer into a child. In the end wanderer accomplished his goal, his girlfriend takes him and raises him, the ending is confusing, so you might get lost or dont know this happened, the spritual is a little muddled, but it is still there.

It is a fun game I recommend to 10 +, (depends if they are mature enough), its fun the first time, kinda wares out after that
