It's dervived from the word Ecclesiastic, which means "of the church." I don't think they meant any offence by it, but that's just my opinion.

Just a little comment about the whole witch thing: I really don't remember why was she called that, but she isn't offended because she lost her memories along with her feeling, so there's no way she could be offended. And About the christian things, I think it have been there in all Castlevania games, as something sacred, to defeat the evil.

I just got this game today. I'm withholding any judgement until I finish it, first off. The whole thing with the glyphs is no worse to me than any of the fantasy games I've played. If anything, it seems like they used it to give the whole "magic bag" thing with most games a place, you know like how in Zelda, Link doesn't seem to have a place to store all his stuff, but it's there at a moments notice. Seems similar to how the sub-weapons are there in this game.

And to some comments above, just because a reference is made, that doesn't make it what it is either. It could be that in the story, the character isn't easily offended either. I don't know, I didn't come up with the game or the characters or the character of the characters either. So, I'd say that it's open to individual interpretation. Then again, it's early in the going for me. I only hope that none of us decide to play the judge of someone's eternal destiny just because they play this game or any of the games for that matter.

Finally, while this game isn't the same formula as the rest, I'm sure it's pretty true to its roots. It's hard anyway. I'm currently going up against the giant skeleton boss; oh boy.

I've played some of this game; it's really good although it does earn it's T rating. Castlevania games, despite being deeper and a little darker in their story these days, are still at their heart old-school style games that bring back memories of classic games like Mario, Metroid, and Zelda where you take out the bad guys and fight for good. They introduce some new gameplay into a classic formula, especially in Order of Ecclesia. I would say if you're not offended by it and you have a DS I would recommend at least trying it, especially if you like classic, 2D-style gameplay with a rpg twist to it.

Good points although I would say that the series is at the point where the scope is not merely superstition but instead perhaps something deeper is being invoked, something spiritual in which it recognizes the importance of faith in Christ in defeating the forces of evil. This is shown by the fact that most of the vampire hunters put their trust in God; whether it be the belmont in castlevania 3 praying at a shrine before being summoned to fight dracula and his forces, the one dude in Castlevania 64 signing himself with the sign of the cross before commencing to fight dracula, to even Alucard who is seen clutching a rosary illuminated by a candle while also holding his sword in his other hand (in the cd case for SoTN; it can also be seen here: http://store.videogamecentral.com/wall-scroll-castlevania-symphony-of-the-night-p312.html). I think the makers of the game want to make it a cool game for those who believe and perhaps also those who don't. I can't tell how theological they're trying to make the game at times or what their message/point is sometimes but I don't think they're trying to offend Christians. That's just my opinion on the matter though. I would follow you're conscience.
