However, the game is RIDICULOUSLY gory. It doesn't bother me in-game, but cutscene deaths like the suicide-with-shotgun one irk me.
And it was forgotten in the review that a COG soldier is eaten by parasites, and his ribcage can be seen (no guts or organs though, and when they run away, the acid turns the area a dark green) for a few moments.
The executions are somewhere in-between disgusting and awesome, and include shooting heads off (snipers and shotguns only), brutally curbstomping their head off, ripping them either in half or in chunks with a chainsaw, bashing them in the face with the butt of a rifle and then kicking them when they fall, and watching body parts fly in a grenade explosion.
Language is basically R-rated, combining strength and repeated usage.
Very motley content, but the game is addicting and fun.

I think they used to have filters in old first-person shooters so you wouldn't have to deal with all that if you didn't want to.

...then again, they could make sci-fi shooters more like the Metroid Prime series: no cussing, women are dressed well and/or not important to the game (pretty much focus on the actual shooter gameplay, and let the NPCs take the back burner), and blood/gore is either used tastefully and/or optional, or just leave it out altogether.

I didn't find the game nearly as 'dark and violent" as you described. If you enjoyed the first game, you'll enjoy this one. If you had no problems with the first, filter or not filter, same goes for this one. It's one of the best games I've played for 360, you only kill aliens, and it's pretty clean with the filters on. I highly recommend it.

Halo wars was not a good game, it had an awful story and cardboard cutout characters and was oversimplified. Bioshock had great story, atmosphere, it was a work of art

I can see your point. That was just the mood I was in at the moment, the reason I said the side scrolling and all. But...what you said still rings true. All games could be made appropriate, but the developers love their cussing, women, blood, gore, etc. And yes, shooters are okay, so long as their not like GoW, or Bioshock, which is a shame.
