CV1 is one of the harder ones since Simon controls like a 50-foot robot made of lead; later games give you abilities like changing direction mid-jump and the SNES Super Castlevania IV even let you whip in all eight directions [and walk backwards up staircases].

I guess I owe everyone a big apology. I finally decided to give the first game a try. Now, while I'm not saying I'm a big fan of Castlevania (if all the games are like that one, the most I'll be is really annoyed) But I do apologise if I came off as better than everybody else. (forgive my bad spelling if there is any; I just got up after a long night)

This is for Tim, about his goths comment (he's right about unicorns and vampires being close to occultic, actually unicorns are mentioned in the Bible).

If you're referring to younger teenage goths than YES, most have no idea what goth is or what goth rock sounds like. The older goths (college age on up, are quite mature and very funny and do all in their power to distance themselves from the vampire stereotype).

Vampyres as a subculture is actually a fringe part of the goth scene and its looked at with disdain and embarrassment by most goths, myself included.

Mythology doesn't bother me as much. In fact, I find Greek mythology quite fancinating. Knowing that, I suppose it seems strange that I wouldn't be so unsettled by one creature of myth but another.

I have to say though, it's something that they present God in a video game. It doesn't sound like they do so in a way that would offend me, from how you describe it.

If they didn't portray Dracula as you said, I probably wouldn't see anything wrong with making him somewhat sympathetic. I'm familar with the story (story here meaning the timeline) how he lost the only one he cared for and unjustly at that. With me, it wouldn't change anything, kind of like in Wind Waker when Ganon tells like why he wanted to rule Hyrule. You felt even a bit sorry for him, but you still had to put an end to him. Even Darth Vader would fit into that; I felt sorry for him because he chose evil.

I'm rambling I know.

I would like to try the old games, but I don't know. Even in their case, I still find it unsettling. Then again, I felt the same way about Zelda and Final Fantasy. Then again, they have the advantage of not taking place in a real world. I think that helps further root it in fantasy. Castlevania on the other hand does take place in a real place (Transylvania) and a real year, even though it's still made-up.

@SeriousGamer:

Doesn't Rev 20:12-13 say that all will be judged according to their works? I'd assume that would mean that if a vampire [well, half vampire] truly were good in thought and deed, it wouldn't matter that he was a vampire.

Not that this necessarily means Castlevania is wholly Christian, mind; it presents a universe where the God of the Bible is real [Richter can even invoke the image of Jesus Christ on the cross, which does a lot of damage to his evil foes] but so are a whole host of beings from other mythologies and belief systems such as ancient Greece [Medusa] and old Semetic myths [Golems]. Moreover, it's become increasingly clear in recent games that Dracula is in fact the source of all evil in the world rather than Satan [no, it doesn't make a lot of sense]; this is very troublesome, since Dracula is also presented as a tortured and sympathetic figure at times in recent games.

I wouldn't worry about the older games overmuch, though; the vampires aren't presented as cool, they're creepy old men in crumbling castles in the Christopher Lee mold; villians to be defeated, not misunderstood heroes to be understood.
