Try Final Fantasy 3/6. In my opinion it's one of the best rpgs and one of the cleanest too.

The combat system sounds a lot like the one from Chrono Trigger.

And all in all, I think the game's virtues outweigh a lot of its flaws. There's some really great stuff the game has, in terms of a moral story. Yeah, there's a lot of stuff they should've done without, like the near-naked wind boss. But still, this is quite the title. I just can't give it the recommendation I'd like to.

The SNES version is a little cleaner (not the GBA & PS1 ports), but it still have the magic elements (summoning, black/white magic). Also it does not have the improvements that the DS version has.
